It is a short trip from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay, the main town on the Isle of Bute with its palm trees and promenade. Once a very popular Victorian seaside resort thanks to its mild climate and proximity to Glasgow, Rothesay was granted the status of royal burgh by King Robert III. Along the promenade, the Victorian Winter Garden is now home to the Isle of Bute Discovery Centre - with exhibitions and displays about the island. There is also a genealogy centre, a cinema and museums with information on local history, geology and wildlife. One of the most unusual attractions in Rothesay is the award-winning restored Victorian Toilets on the pier. There are many more interesting historic buildings such as the ruined Rothesay Castle. Ferries to Bute leave from Wemyss Bay on the mainland, arriving at Rothesay on Bute, which takes 35 minutes. There’s also a ferry from Colintraive on the mainland to Rhubodach on Bute, which takes 5 minutes. Fifteen miles long and five miles across at its widest point, the island is home to many historical sites including Rothesay Castle and Mount Stuart House, beautiful gardens and fabulous sandy beaches, such as Ettrick Bay. There are walks for all abilities, with the West Island Way running the length of the island, providing waymarked footpaths through the hills.

From the lush, fertile and rolling hills of the island’s heart to the craggy, heather-covered moorlands of the north and the delightful sandy beaches around the coastline, the island is a haven for walking, cycling, fishing and wildlife.
